SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA— The winner of the matchup between the San Clemente Tritons and the San Juan Hills Stallions would make their case for a league championship substantially stronger. However, this game meant a lot more to San Clemente running back, James Bohls. San Clemente assistant coach and running back coach, Joe Wood, passed away from the coronavirus in February, and he was a big part of Bohls’ life. Bohls honored Wood in a very important game against San Juan Hills, and he did it in the way he knows best.
On the Tritons’ first possession, Bentley Redden, who is signed with BYU, caught a pass from Lachlan Van Rosmalen on 3rd down and 7 for a 25-yard touchdown, and San Clemente took an early 7-0 lead (PAT good). After San Juan Hills was forced to punt on 4th down and 2, James Bohls ran for a big gain to the San Clemente 47-yard line. Tony Hall then caught a 13-yard pass in San Juan Hills’ territory, and the first quarter ended with San Clemente up by a touchdown.
The Tritons kept going to start the second quarter, as Bohls ran up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown to make the score 14-0 (PAT good). The San Clemente defense continued to contain the Stallion offense, forcing a three and out. However, San Clemente was forced to punt on their next possession. When the Tritons got the ball back, James Bohls went back to work, as he broke tackles and ran into the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown to put the Tritons up by three touchdowns going into halftime (PAT good).
The strong run game for San Clemente continued to power the way through for San Clemente to start the second half. Tritons’ running back, Ashton Whitsett, ran for a rushing touchdown for San Clemente, and the Tritons extended their lead to 28-0 (PAT good).
However, San Juan Hills finally broke their scoring silence to start the fourth quarter. After the Stallions focused on running the ball the first half, they finally saw some success in the pass game. Quarterback, Hudson Jones found wide receiver, Dashiel Ross, for a 5-yard touchdown to make the score 28-7 (PAT good).
But James Bohls wouldn’t let anything get in the way of this incredibly meaningful game for him. The Arizona-bound running back ran for a 45-yard touchdown on his final carry of the game to extend the Tritons’ lead to 35-7 (PAT good). After San Juan Hills was unable to answer, the clock hit zero, and San Clemente walked away with a great 35-7 win.
San Clemente improves to 3-0 on the season, and remains one of the top teams in Southern California. The Tritons will take on Tesoro next week on Friday, April 9th, at 7 PM PT (10 PM ET). The San Juan Hills Stallions suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 2-1. The Stallions will be tested again next week, as they are set to take on Mission Viejo on Friday, April 9th, at 7 PM PT (10 PM ET).
